Flying to the Alps this winter: Sion, Chambéry or Geneva?

Three airports, three very different arrivals. Here is how we choose for each resort.

Sion: closest to the slopes

Sion sits in the Rhône valley, forty minutes from Verbier and Crans-Montana. The runway is short and the approach runs between mountains, so we book light and midsize jets with crews who fly it every winter.

Chambéry: for the French resorts

Chambéry is the quickest way into Courchevel, Méribel and Val d'Isère. It is busy on Saturdays in February, so we book slots as soon as you confirm.

If the weather closes Sion, we divert to Geneva and the car meets you there instead.

Geneva: the safe choice

Geneva takes every size of jet, stays open in almost any weather and has two private terminals. It is the longer drive, but it is the airport we fall back on when the mountains say no.
